Whakanuia Awards 2025

South Canterbury families - register your kids for the Whakanuia Awards 2025!

To all our South Canterbury families, we are really pleased to let you know that Parent to Parent and Timaru District Council are again partnering to host the Whakanuia Awards 2025! We absolutely loved celebrating your tamariki last year (Mayor Nigel Bowen said it was his favourite event he’s ever been to and that he just couldn’t stop smiling!) and we are excited to do it all again.

The Whakanuia awards are about celebrating the amazing achievements of children and youth with disabilities, neurodivergence, and other health impairments. Every child deserves to have their moment to shine, to get a bit dressed up, to hear their name called out, to walk across the stage, to collect a certificate, to have their family clap and cheer, to get photographs – to be CELEBRATED!! We also know that not every child will be comfortable walking on stage, so we will work in with whatever makes your child comfortable. That could mean that the Timaru District Council Mayor, Nigel Bowen, comes off stage and brings their certificate to them at their seat – or that it is presented afterwards during afternoon tea. Registrations must be completed in order to receive an invitation to attend, and registrations close on 28 October.

Criteria to receive an invitation – aged 5 – 21 years, and must have a disability, neurodivergence, or other health impairment, and the registration must be completed (the information received is not used for any other purpose rather that ensuring criteria is met). Please share with your whānau and friends if you know an incredible young person that deserves to be celebrated and have their moment to shine!
