“Research has shown that caring for a disabled child places comparatively more complex demands on the primary caregiver than caring for a nondisabled child. Studies have also concluded there are significant differences when meeting the needs of mothers who care for a disabled child compared to meeting the needs of mothers who care for a nondisabled child.

The aim of this project was to identify the experiences that mothers who care for a young disabled child may encounter with medical and health professionals, as well as family and friends. The mothers’ experiences were gathered from various types of support and information provided, or not provided, from the time of their child’s birth or initial diagnosis of being disabled to when their child started school.”
