“A qualitative study was undertaken exploring the experiences and feelings of four women when receiving the diagnosis of their baby born with an unexpected visible disability.
The study found that they all experienced negative emotions as a result of the diagnosis. These emotions were increased further through disempowering interactions the women had with health professionals and in the ways in which communication occurred.
All experienced some feelings of dissatisfaction with the treatment they received.
The women have highlighted those things which they found to be helpful and beneficial and have made suggestions for Midwives and other health professionals with whom the responsibility of communicating the diagnosis of a disability lies.”
