We understand some families do not like to attend mainstream groups as there can be a lack of support or mum and dad feel out of place. The idea is to create a safe space where families can experience the joy of music and perhaps gain confidence to try other groups.
A member of the CCS early intervention team begins each session by leading the group through a set of songs using different props, musical instruments, animal shapes, soft toys and bubbles. Song requests can be made! Obviously Baby Shark has been sung (just once or twice!). A physiotherapist visits the group from time to time. This is followed by tea, coffee and biscuits and time for parents to chat with each other, with our Greater Canterbury coordinator and the CCS team. Usually it is just general chat, but information and tips are also shared, much like our coffee groups. Some of the mums have made connections and have catch ups outside of the group which is such a great outcome.
Shitika regularly attends the music group with her one-year-old daughter Divya who was born prematurely with a few difficulties. Shitika says:
I bring Divya to the music group because she loves music and enjoys dancing. She also likes to socialise with other kids. Every time she goes she gains more confidence.
